Ngozi Blessing, the acclaimed gospel artist with a voice that resonates with the divine, sits down with The Guardian’s Ifeanyi Ibeh to share her journey from a childhood dream to stardom, her spiritual inspiration, and the challenges she’s faced along the way.
Question: Was being a musician a childhood dream for you?
Answer: As kids growing up, we have favorites and most loved, but as we become young adults, we begin to explore an inner passion, and it then becomes a dream. Yes, singing was a childhood dream for me because I was fortunate to become aware that I had it in me when I was very young.
What inspired you to make music?
First, passion inspired me, and then the thought of reaching lost souls and reconnecting them back to their original, which is the Supreme GOD. This also inspired me and has kept inspiring me.
What challenges did you face on your way to stardom?
First, there is not a person without a challenge. I would mention one very important challenge, which is the challenge of wanting and working so hard to ensure your music is heard and effectively understood. Every other challenge is part of life, so as long as you’re a person.
How would you describe the music you typically create?
Being a gospel artist, a spirited one, my type of music aims to create a deep spiritual revolution that connects a person’s body and soul to a Holy being, creating the change that he or she deserves.
How do you juggle being a producer and a singer?
The challenge of keeping both roles as a singer and a producer wasn’t a one-day thing. It was a journey. I became one before the other. I sing when I have to sing, and I record when I need to. There’s a time to sing and a time to record.
Has stardom deprived you of anything?
I wouldn’t say stardom has deprived me of anything. I grew up becoming a disciplined lady, allowing me to see life from a braver and wiser perspective. Being deprived doesn’t make me lesser, so to me, it might just be a problem that will be solved sooner or later.
Are you still friends with those who were with you before stardom?
First, I am not one to keep many friends, but I will honestly say my friends are my friends, and we talk whenever it is important that we need to because true friends are not just friends but sisters.
How do you handle advances from male fans?
I handle advances from male fans the same way I would handle advances from my man or admirers as a normal person, but in this case, I am very careful in my approach.
You were away from the music scene for a while. Was this intentional?
Yes, it was intentional because I had to address a private matter to ensure it didn’t get out of hand. This was to ensure a good and fruitful life as a star.
What project are you currently working on?
I am currently working on something that has been a part of my life for a long time. To disclose a little, I have some records that will be released next month and several others before the year comes to an end.
What is your favorite song to perform?
I love to sing “I am grateful,” which I sang.
What advice do you have for upcoming musicians?
Put GOD first in everything and anything you’re doing. Put passion into anything that concerns your elevation, set standards, and be humble.
